How to ask your doctor for an awake MRI

Many children can complete an MRI awake with preparation, but it is always a decision for your child's care team. Here's how to start the conversation.

1. Ask when the MRI is ordered

Say: "Could my child try this MRI without sedation first? Does this hospital have a child life or 'try without' program?"

2. Questions to ask

3. Who usually qualifies

Programs listed here commonly start around age 4 to 6, but criteria vary. Infant "feed and swaddle" scans exist at some hospitals. Check each listing.

4. Practice at home

5. Find a program

Search the directory or call the radiology department and ask for child life.
